Real or imagined, there are places around the globe that many travelers believe exude a very special energy, positive vibes, a calming atmosphere and an overall sense of healthy well-being.

You know the feeling when you’ve been somewhere that just feels right or special, providing an impactful aura of peace, tranquility, and beauty that touches the heart and soul. Or perhaps an overall sense of euphoria and bliss. Maybe we didn’t understand the reason we felt so totally balanced at the time. But felt it, we did.

Some attribute these feelings to the powers of a vortex.

What is a Vortex?

Vortexes (or vortices) are areas of concentrated energy rising from the living earth. These swirling centers of energy conducive to healing, meditation, and self-exploration can’t be seen but many say their subtle energies can be sensed.

Those drawn by this energy often describe a range of sensations from slight skin tingling to a palpable sensation across the neck and shoulder blades.

Some call this belief in vortexes ‘New Age,’ however it was the Native Americans who have long believed in the mystical powers of unique places they deemed sacred.

Others describe an increased sense of clarity or understanding about themselves or their life choices along with an increased inspiration or creativity.

So, whether you believe the land holds mystical powers or are just looking for places that provide amazing experiences, we guarantee a visit to these destinations will be a balm to the soul and a mend to the spirit.

This stunning Southwest city nestled within the Coconino National Forest is considered the gateway to Northern Arizona. It doesn’t take long to see what draws so many visitors to Sedona. Serene, breathtaking beauty abounds, fostering an intimate connection to those who love nature and the outdoors.

It just so happens that Sedona’s seven vortexes are located in some of the most stunningly picturesque places imaginable, among its colorful and dramatic red rock formations. And most vortex locations are accessible by hike, jeep tour, or off-roading adventures.

Taos, New Mexico

D. H. Lawrence once described Taos as a “state of mind.” As one of New Mexico’s most fascinating towns, Taos fittingly embraces the state’s motto as the “Land of Enchantment.”

Life forces flow down from its high peaks and well up from its deep canyons. Blessed with clean air, rich spiritual traditions, natural beauty and a unique blend of cultures, Taos’ mystical magic draws visitors like moths to a flame.

Taos’ vortex is said to radiate from its ever-popular El Nogal Trailhead abutting the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. Even Taos’ magnificent resort, El Monte Sagrado (The Sacred Mountain) nurtures its own special magic as spiritualists including the Dali Lama have come to bless its sacred grounds.

This mountain harboring many legends has drawn spiritual seekers from around the globe. A widely-held myth is that its ice-topped volcano is home to a sacred spring and Native Americans believe the mountain to be the sacred center of the universe. These powerful beliefs are reflected in both tribal   lore and stories.

Visitors cannot doubt the timeless beauty of the area with its stunning crystalline waterfalls, bubbling mountain streams and the many other bountiful gifts of Mother Nature. And certainly, it is a place exuding total relaxation and a sense of tranquil peace.

If you’ve ever witnessed a sunrise over Haleakala, you’ll understand why this mountain crater’s summit, located at 10,000 feet is so very special.

Haleakala (House of the Sun) is a place of spiritual significance to Hawaiians. While many tourists trek to the top early in the morning to watch the rising sun, Hawaiians worship here and offer hauntingly beautiful chants to celebrate the beginning of another day. No matter how popular this location is at sunrise, the silence is deafening as the sun slowly creeps above the horizon. It is indeed a spiritual moment.

Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England

Located on Salisbury Plain, Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument made of massive standing stones. History tells us the megalithic wonder was likely erected between 3000 and 2000 BC, but why and how it was built without crane and mortar remains a mystery.

Some spiritualists and historians surmise Stonehenge was built as a way to transition spirits to their afterlife. Others believe the construction coincides with the summer solstice where the heat of the sun on the longest day creates a vortex originating from the inner rings of Stonehenge, and swirling upwards.

Whatever your beliefs, many visitors to Stonehenge describe a peaceful energy flow and a mysterious draw to these fascinating and haunting monoliths.

Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa

A massive flat-topped iconic pinnacle overlooking the bustling city of Cape Town, Table Mountain National Park is sought out by nearly 4.2 million visitors annually, and for good reason. It’s absolutely magnificent.

Table Mountain is viewed by many as the Earth vortex, one of four sites scattered around the world that govern the powers of earth, air, fire and water. The mountain held a special place in former president Nelson Mandela’s heart.

Some believe the mountain has healing powers, but there’s no doubt it has a calming, peaceful beckoning effect when standing in its stunning presence.

Es Vedra, Ibiza, Spain

This fascinating giant limestone rock towers at over 1,300 feet above the ocean off the west coast of Ibiza.

Despite the fact that Es Vedra cannot be visited in person, the area around the mysterious formation is renowned to be the third most magnetic spot in the world after the North Pole and the Bermuda Triangle. As a result, the massive rock formation has been the subject of many tales and legends.

Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt

Even as a child, the Great Pyramid was utterly fascinating to me. Then during my middle school years, I visited Egypt and this incredibly mysterious structure for the first time.

No one truly knows how the oldest and last remaining intact of the original seven wonders was constructed, but they are so colossal, they can be spotted from the moon.

Physicists have discovered that the pyramid stores electromagnetic energy in its chambers, contributing to the belief that this is an energy vortex. Nonetheless, a visit here is unlike any other place on Earth, sacred, powerful and incredibly mysterious.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Yes, it is popular and yes, many have visited, and many more will certainly come. Perhaps it is because Machu Picchu is believed to emit a subterranean energy field that resides in the Inca Citadel of this famous mountain overlooking the Sacred Valley.

This Inca ruin is said to be responsible for many healings and spiritual awakenings, though the entire region is well known for its ancient mysticism that lingers and persists even today.

The Sacred Rock of Machu Picchu is one that most visitors come to place their hands on to internalize its vibration. And consider this, no matter who you speak to that has spent time in Machu Picchu, they will proclaim that this magnificent place is uniquely special.

Interestingly enough, it was famous scientist Albert Einstein who once said “The most beautiful and profound emotion we can experience is the sensation of the mystical.”

Unexplainable? Yes. But there’s no denying these special places have long held a sacred or spiritual connection between mankind and our expansive universe since the dawn of humanity.
