In yet another account of heroic intervention in a crisis by a passenger cruise ship, the crew of Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Dream yesterday assisted in the rescue of 17 people who had found themselves stranded in the Belize Channel after their boat capsized.

Carnival Dream was sailing on a course headed for the Mexican Caribbean resort island of Cozumel when the ship’s officers, quite fortunately, spotted the overturned boat and the group in distress

Captain Francesco Fiorentino’s officers and crew promptly alerted the Belize Coast Guard of the situation and proceeded to lower one of its shipboard tenders into the water. Working in conjunction with small boats dispatched locally from Belize, Carnival Dream was able to safely recover all 17 castaways. Each member of the rescued group was assessed as being in good condition before the ship their transfer to land was coordinated with the Belize Coast Guard.

Following the incident, Carnival Dream continued on to Cozumel as scheduled—one stop on its six-day itinerary that set sail roundtrip from its homeport in Galveston on May 14 and will return on May 20.
