Cunard is the latest cruise line now able to utilize shore power across its fleet while in port.

The milestone, which allows cruise ships to switch off their on-board engines and utilize a port’s local electricity grid, reduces emissions and noise while in port, making it one of the methods that cruise ships are implementing to increase sustainability.

The cruise line’s three ships — Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth — are all now able to use shore power. The Queen Anne, set to debut in May of 2024, will also have the ability to use shore power.

“By adopting shore power technology, we are taking a significant step in our ongoing commitment to reducing emissions, minimizing our carbon footprint, and fostering healthier port environments,” said Cunard President Katie McAlister. “The introduction of shore power technology aligns seamlessly with Cunard's corporate vision and values, and we are proud to be able to take such a positive step.”
