‘Cyclone Hamoon’ takes shape over Bay of Bengal. 10 things to know

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday evening said that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclone.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, however, maintained that the storm would not have any major impact on the Indian coast.

He, however, added that light to moderate rainfall and strong winds could be recorded at a few places in coastal Odisha due to the storm.

Here's what else we know about Cyclone Hamoon

  • The IMD said that deep depression over Bay of Bengal moved north with a speed of 14 kmph during the last six hours and intensified into a cyclonic storm.
  • At 5.30 pm, the system was around 230 km off the Paradip coast in Odisha, 360 km south of Digha in West Bengal, and 510 km south-southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh, according to the IMD.
  • The storm is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours.
  • According to the weather department, Cyclone Hamoon is likely to cross Bangladesh's coast somewhere between Khepupara and Chittagong.
  • The cyclonic storm is likely to make landfall at around 12 pm on October 25 as a deep depression.
  • In Odisha, the state government has directed all district collectors to remain alert.
  • The state government has also directed the administration to evacuate people from low-lying areas in the event of heavy rain.
  • Mohapatra said the wind speed over the Bay of Bengal will gradually increase to 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph by Tuesday morning.
  • Under the influence of the storm, Odisha has already received about 15 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. The weather predicts that light to moderate rain may continue in the coastal areas on Monday and Tuesday.
  • The IMD has also asked fishermen not to venture into west-central Bay of Bengal till Wednesday, and along and off the Odisha coast and north Bay of Bengal during Monday-Wednesday.
