Delta Air Lines has broken the ice.

When Mexico opens its new airport in Tulum, Delta will become the first major U.S. airline to fly into the popular tourist destination.

The airport is expected to open in December; Delta said it would begin flights from its headquarters in Atlanta to Tulum on March 28.

There will be daily flights from Atlanta to Tulum. Delta will offer year-round service to the famous Mexican town.

Tulum is known for its beaches and ancient ruins, but it is 90 miles south of Cancun. Most people fly into Cancun and think of Tulum as a side trip. Now Tulum will have its own airport and, presumably, more tourists.

Delta's alliance partner, Aeromexico, begins twice-daily service from Mexico City on December 1.

Delta said it will utilize a single-aisle Boeing 737-800 aircraft out of Atlanta to Tulum.

Tulum will also be on the route for the new Maya Train, which is scheduled to debut in December.
