Southwest Airlines has a new route.

It will fly from Oakland, California, to Baltimore-Washington International.

It’s not a shock, but surprising in that Oakland is still considering a name change to the airport. The nonstop flight began Tuesday, September 5.

It will be a daily flight.

Southwest will use a Boeing 737 that seats 175 passengers.

“This new transcontinental nonstop is a definite time-saver for those traveling between the San Francisco Bay Area and the Baltimore-Washington metro area,” says Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “Their growing network provides Southwest’s legendary service, numerous convenient options to choose from coupled with the certainty and ease of using OAK. Together, this is a winning combination for everyone.”

The airport estimates 900 people per day travel from the San Francisco East Bay to the Baltimore/ Washington DC metropolitan area. The new Southwest Airlines flight addresses demand by air travelers for transcontinental flights that allow them to use OAK and skip enroute stops when flying coast to coast.

BWI is located just 33 miles from downtown Washington.
