Southwest Airlines Planning to Add Red-Eye Flights

Some people just prefer to fly late at night and arrive at their destination the following day.

The industry calls them red-eye flights.

Now, Southwest Airlines, the nation’s fourth-busiest carrier, is considering adding red eyes to its itinerary.

CEO Bob Jordan said it would be a “logical evolution for the airline.” Currently, Southwest does not offer any red-eye flights. They are advantageous for customers who like to rest and not disrupt their sleep schedule. They are used on long-haul flights and involve a time change.

And it really doesn’t cost the airline too much, except for maybe juggling its flight schedule and perhaps some overtime pay for crew.

“It’s a logical evolution for us,” Jordan said. “We have the aircraft; it’s a great way to use an asset that you already have and use it more productively which means more hours in the day. So, we will be doing red eyes.”

This could be another revenue option for Southwest at little cost to the airline.

Discussions are underway about adding red-eye flights, but there is no timetable for implementation.

In the meantime, Southwest will be one of the airlines trying to fend off possible strikes.
