Things to Do in La Paz, Mexico

Perched on the edge of the Baja Peninsula just 100 miles or so from Los Cabos, the region is a paradise for beach lovers and an easy getaway for travelers from the West. 

One of the top things to do in La Paz, Mexico, is sea kayaking. There are numerous outfitters that can take travelers out on the water and visitors can choose to go for just a day tour or experience a full-on adventure with a multi-day tour. 

Getting up close and personal with wildlife is another of the most popular things to do in this region located on the Sea of Cortez. It has been referred to as nature's aquarium and nowhere does this come to life more is at Los Islotes at Isla Espiritu Santo Island where playful sea lions await to greet visitors. These animated creatures populate the rocky outcroppings of these islands, which are part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. 

Whales migrate through La Paz, Mexico, every year, making the region an exciting place to view these majestic creatures. One of the things that makes La Paz so special, however, is that the whales come to this area to nurse their calves in the shallow lagoons. Whale-watching season usually takes place between January and April when sightings are almost guaranteed.

Sea lions aren't the only sea mammal that visitors can swim with off the shores of La Paz. Whale sharks also come to feed in the area from October to April and it is one of the most popular places to come and swim with these gentle giants. 

Land-based activities in La Paz are also popular with tourists.

Visitors can explore the nearby Magic Town of Todos Santos, popular for its charming streets, art galleries and gastronomy or head to the area's museums such as the Ruta de Plata, which publicizes the publicize the history of mining in the region through interactive exhibitions. The Museo del Vaquero de las Californias (MUVACA) is another museum and is located in El Triunfo and is home to exhibits that highlight the area's ranching industry.

La Paz is also home to more than 60 miles of hiking trails where visitors can explore the local flora and fauna as well as learn about the region's history of mining.
